Artist's Statement: Cityscapes

My cityscapes begin with everyday urban scenes, distilled into their essence of shape and line and then transformed by the expressive potential of colour.
I see my work in cloth and stitch as a contemporary expression of the culture of women's needlework.
- Some of these pieces are essentially drawings in stitch, on a background of hand-dyed cotton.
- Others begin with a collage of hand-dyed cotton shapes. A stitched line superimposed on the collage adds definition.
- Still others are detailed with ink or paint, or feature patterned cotton.

Education
While pursuing my BFA (with distinction) at Concordia University, I often submitted work in cloth. I have continued to grow as an artist through exhibiting, workshops, travel, teaching, reading and by looking at all kinds of art. I manage a small showcase of local art and have served as a judge for the provincial quilt association.
